Kimberley Immersion Program

Each year, medical students at the University of Notre Dame Australia (Fremantle) spend a week living and working in one of Australia’s most remote regions: the Kimberley. The experience provides the students with incredible insight into remote communities and the people who call the Kimberley their home. The Kimberley Immersion Program is one of The University of Notre Dame – Fremantle’s most popular and successful rural immersion opportunities for medical students. In 2022, the immersion was hosted in a hybrid format, with students spending 4 days and 3 nights camping in Derby.

Unfortunatley, the students were unable to billet with local families across the Kimberley this year due to COVID but this has occurred in the past. Instead they were able to participate in a range of local experiences that make the Kimberley one of the most unique communities in the world.

This rural immersion program has become so instrumental in luring young doctors back to the bush!

Wheatbelt Immersion Program

The Wheatbelt Medical Student Immersion Program has been developed in direct response to Western Australia’s acute doctor shortages.  With the majority of those shortages experienced in rural and regional areas, the Program has been identified to provide doctors with a first-hand experience of medicine in a rural community.

WMSIP sees first-year medical students from The University of Notre Dame Australia School of Medicine (Fremantle) and second-year Curtin University Medical School students participate in a four-day placement across nine Wheatbelt towns: Bruce Rock, Cunderdin, Kellerberin, Merredin, Moora, Narrogin, Corrigin, Southern Cross, Westonia and Wongan Hills. In 2022, the program was a hybrid immersion – with students from The University of Notre Dame spending one day in Narrogin and then having daily virtual visits with people and families living in the Wheatbelt.
