SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

Special Interest Groups (colloquially referred to as SpIGs) are student-run societies that create educational events and resources related to a particular field of medicine. These initiatives are on offer to all the medical students at Notre Dame Freo and allow for a broader exposure to medical specialties beyond the scope of the standard curriculum. Such events often feature consultants and leading experts as guest speakers.

PHYSICIANS SOCIETY

2024 Chairs: TBA

The Physicians Society was established in 2012, with the goal of maximising students’ exposure and education in the fields of general and internal medicine and additional medical sub-specialties.

Our Society aims to:

  • Provide student members who aspire to be a Physician with guidance and direction in relation to clinical pathways and opportunities in the field;
  • Promote the understanding of the necessary prerequisites for a career in medicine and various medical subspecialties;
  • Provide opportunities to engage with and form professional relationships with practicing clinicians, and
  • Provide avenues for focused professional training and educational opportunities.

NOTRE DAME OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY

2024 Chairs: TBA

ND O&G provides education on the planning, multi-disciplinary management and care within women’s health through workshops, career information sessions, networking events, and symposiums. The convenience of locally planned events and readily accessible knowledge assists in preparing students for placements and future endeavours. ND O&G also creates opportunities to raise awareness and fundraise for disadvantaged women’s groups in nearby communities.

TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL

2024 Chairs: TBA

This Teddy Bear Hospital is run by medical students at the University of Notre Dame Fremantle with the goal of reducing childhood anxiety associated with medical environments, procedures and health care workers, along with promoting healthy behaviours.

The project will focus on service-learning through the method of teaching, learning and reflecting, by combining training curriculum with meaningful service.

In working closely with predominantly pre-primary age children, trained Teddy Bear Doctors will also gain paediatric experience and develop skills for interacting and communicating with children.

Teddy Bear Hospital provides a creative, fun, and stress free environment where a child can bring along their Teddy, to be attended to by the Teddy Bear Doctors and experience a simulated hospital environment without being a patient themselves.

GP STUDENT NETWORK

2024 Chairs: TBA

The General Practice Students Network (GPSN) is run by students interested in general practice as a specialty, for students with the same interest, facilitated by the General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) head office to create programs and resources to support the next generation of Australia’s general practitioners. There are active GPSN clubs in medical schools at all 21 university campuses across Australia.

GPSN offers programs focused on exposing medical students to the inspiring diversity of a career in general practice. Activities include fun clinical skill sessions, social events, seminars and conferences, peer support and networking opportunities.

GPRA also offers GPSN members the John Murtagh First Wave Scholarship, offering medical students early real-world exposure to general practice, coupling scholars with mentors that often produce relationships that endure for many years.

GPSN is administered by General Practice Registrars Australia (GPRA) and is supported by a funding grant from General Practice Education and Training (GPET)
